Sashiko - small stiches

A thousand-year-old Japanese stitching technique which is perfectly appropriate to strengthen, repair and embellish worn and tattered clothes. It is based on a grid of horizontal and vertical, crossing lines, which help to develop design; or rather of straight or curved lines, filled with as many little stiches to get from one point to the next.

The interplay of patches and embroidery creates casual, harmonious improvisations. This not only repairs items of clothing, but also transforms them into individual showpieces.

Sustainability in practice: Sashiko offers many possibilities to counteract current trend of consumption and throwaway of cheap garments with an appreciation of quality and longtime use.

In my courses you will learn the basic Sashiko stiches with its fascinating possibilities of variation and the skillful combination of materials and colors to make textiles artistic, but also durable and washable. The technique is also suitable for absolute stitching beginners.

The simplest embroidery stitch in the world can be varied thousands of times and its complexity can be increased endlessly.

Sashiko is meditative, relaxing, creative, and- be careful! – addictive

All you need is a good long needle and a tear-resistant thread.
Jeans, blouses, coats and shirts in particular can be given a wonderful new lease of life in this way.
