Boro = Patch, ragged clothing
Due to the lack of resources and material scarcity, textiles in Japan were repeatedly sewn and patched with fabric patches and then embroidered with small stitches and patterns (see Sashiko)
This made them stable and durable and resulted in a new aesthetic of simplicity and imperfection. This is a basis of Wabi Sabi: the repair should remain visible and contributes to the style of the clothing. Imperfections in objects are valued and emphasize the philosophy of imperfection, but also of individuality.
It is also an expression of Mottainai, the regret and counteracting of something being wasted.
